Stipendiary Lectureship in Philosophy

Lady Margaret Hall (LMH) proposes to appoint a stipendiary lecturer in Philosophy from 1st October 2021 to teach undergraduates for an average of eight contact hours a week.

The lecturer will be expected to offer tutorials on the General Philosophy component of Mods/Prelims (an introductory undergraduate course), in addition to offering tutorials on the Finals paper Ethics, and further Finals papers (i.e. advanced undergraduate courses). The lecturer will also teach philosophy to visiting students and contribute to the philosophy side of the LMH Foundation Year programme.

The lecturer will work under the direction of the Philosophy Fellow and the Senior Tutor.

In addition to teaching, the lecturer will be expected to help, as required, with related administrative duties and pastoral duties. This will include serving as Organising or Personal Tutor to undergraduates and Foundation Year students, helping to organise their tuition, to monitor their progress and to provide general pastoral support. It will also involve the setting and marking of collections (termly College examinations) and completing tutorial reports.

The lecturer will play a key role in the admissions exercises for undergraduates and the Foundation Year. Interviews for undergraduate courses take place at the end of Michaelmas Term and for the Foundation Year at the end of Hilary Term. It is hoped that the lecturer will become an active member of the College community and participate fully in the life of the College.

The lecturer will be paid on the stipendiary lecturers’ scale (£18,341 to £20,628 for 8 hours at current rates), with entitlement to join USS and with entitlement to some meals without charge during University terms.
