All Associate Professors at the University of Oxford have both a University contract and a formal association with one of Oxfords colleges. The Associate Professor’s teaching time is split between duties for the University (undergraduate lectures, teaching masters and doctoral students etc) and duties for the college (tutorial i.e. very small group teaching and associated pastoral and administrative duties). The balance of duties between the University faculty/department and the College determines which is considered the ‘major’ employer. All Associate Professors, regardless of the nature of the college association, have the same Terms and Conditions in the University contract.
