Associate Professor (or Professor) in Philosophy

Salary: Combined University and College salary range £52,815 - £70,918 p.a. plus additional benefits

Somerville College and the Faculty of Philosophy are recruiting an Associate Professor (or Professor) of Philosophy, with an area of specialisation in metaethics, to start from 1 September 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.

In addition to an area of specialisation in metaethics, the successful candidate will also have at least an area of competence in normative ethics and an additional area of competence in some field within core theoretical philosophy (philosophy of language / mind / metaphysics / epistemology).

This is a joint appointment: the person appointed to the Associate Professorship (or Professorship) will also be appointed to a Tutorial Fellowship at Somerville College. The combined University and College salary will be on a scale from £52,815 to £70,918 per annum (as at 1 August 2023). 

The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in the field of Philosophy, or a closely related field and will have a proven research record of international standing appropriate to the candidate’s career stage, including some research in Metaethics, with evidence of potential for producing further research distinguished in its originality, significance, and rigour. They will be an excellent teacher at undergraduate and graduate level, have the interpersonal skills necessary to engage with students and colleagues at all levels and will participate in the administration of Somerville College and the Faculty of Philosophy.
